At Limehurst Academy we aim to inspire in our students an inherent enjoyment of Mathematics. Our Programme of Study has been designed to enable students to become independent, reflective thinkers who will develop a broad knowledge and understanding of mathematical concepts. This will allow them to become numerate and resilient problem solvers, not in only in Mathematics, but across the entire curriculum.
Mathematics is a core subject and is therefore studied by all students. At GCSE level, students complete the AQA Maths GCSE (8300). The assessment criteria can be found at AQA Assessment Criteria.
Knowledge and understanding
Our Programme of Study focuses on the key elements of Mathematics; Number, Algebra, Ratio, Proportion and Rates of Change, Geometry and Measure, Statistics and Probability. Developing fluency, mathematical reasoning and problem solving are embedded throughout our scheme of learning rather than treated as separate entities. The course is designed to build on the skills and understanding that students have previously developed. Each topic involves students revisiting key concepts from other areas of the Maths curriculum and ensuring that topics are covered so students experience variety, and are given an opportunity to consolidate their learning, to reach higher levels of complexity and understanding.
The programme of study enables students to:
develop knowledge, skills and understanding of mathematical methods and concepts
acquire, select and apply mathematical techniques to solve problems
reason mathematically, make deductions and inferences to be able to draw conclusions
comprehend, interpret and communicate mathematical information in a variety of forms appropriate to the information and context.
At Limehurst, students are encouraged to apply their mathematical knowledge where appropriate in other subject areas as well as in financial contexts.
While Mathematics is a fundamental tool for Science and Technology, many employers prize the knowledge and skills that studying Maths can provide, including competency in solving increasingly sophisticated problems, critical- thinking, collaboration and communicating succinctly.
