Drama

It is a common misconception that Drama in the curriculum is for those who want to be ‘actors’. It is our intention at Limehurst Academy that Drama is for everyone and a subject concerned with the development of transferable skills that are relevant to all, whatever the future career aspirations or goals. Our Drama curriculum allows students to develop essential skills for life and those highly regarded in higher education and employment.  

Drama at Limehurst is exciting, stimulating and diverse. Students have opportunities to devise their own work, applying dramatic techniques to explore themes, topics and issues, interpret the work of playwrights, and bring text to life. We are committed to developing learners practically, focusing on physical and vocal skills, and encouraging them to explore how to communicate meaning to an audience through choices made as performers. Over their time at Limehurst, learners will respond to a wide variety of stimuli, exploring a range of social, historical and cultural contexts, in addition to learning how to evaluate and analyse their own work and that of professional theatre makers. Whilst our curriculum is designed to support students practically, we also recognise the importance of visiting the theatre and exposing pupils to professional work. 

Overall, we believe that students should have access to a broad and ambitious Drama curriculum which aims to: 

  • Provide a safe environment for students to express themselves 

  • Encourage free use of creativity and imagination 

  • Develop pupils’ transferable skills that underpin successful drama such as: cooperation, communication and confidence 

  • Encourage students to develop empathy and engage with others outside their own social and cultural setting 

  • Explore social issues through drama to develop tolerance and understanding 

  • Expose students to different perspectives and emotions on issues and ideas 

  • Promote knowledge and understanding of theatre and performance 

  • Create opportunities for learners to observe professional work
